SNACK FOODS | SAMOSA, PAKORA, CHUTNEY, ACHAR, ETC. | Essentially these are salty tidbits that can be served as appetizers or, like chips and dip, as a snack or pickles that accompany a meal.
Anaheim Pepper Achar | Bari Milchi Achar | Anaheim Peppers (Italian Pepper), preserved by stuffing with spices.
Chuckli | Chuckli | This most resembles a pretzle stick or a sesame cracker. Its crunchy, nutty and tasty and it keeps well.
Coconut Chutney | Nariyal Chutney | Ubiquitous throughout the south, this does not normally accompany north Indian food. Maji did make it when she made us south Indian treats. Its rich, full of cholesterol and fat. Naturally, I love it.
Coriander Leaf Chutney 1 | Hari Duniya Chutney 1 | The most basic, easiest and, (IMHO),the best version of north India's favorite chutney is my husband' recipe. The taste is tangy, fresh and clean.
Coriander Leaf Chutney 2 | Hari Duniya Chutney 2 | Maji's green chutney is richer and a tad more complex in taste.
Lemon Pickle in Spice | Masala Neebu Achar | A tangy spicy lemon pickle to accompany a dinner or as a snack with a bread, cracker, etc.
Potato Pielet | Samosa | Okay, there is no such word as 'pielet'....but there should be. These little pies are delicious little packages of spiced potatoes. The closest comparison would be the English pastie (although pasties are huge, and filled with meat juices as well). There is an Indian meat samosa made with minced hamburger or lamb, but I haven't ever made it.
Tamarind Chutney 2 | Imli Chutney 2 | This is the fancy version of the basic imli chutney.
White Lentil Fritter | Urad Dal Pakora | A fluffy, easy to make lentil puff. With some forethought (must be soaked overnight), this is easy and quick. |
